Chapter Eighteen

Dillon

They returned to Dillon’s car and drove a few miles before crossing railroad tracks and arriving at the town’s train depot and warehouses district. One building among them was crowded with trucks and cars pulled up to its entrance, with patrons walking indoors.

The town’s farmer’s co-op posted reduced hours on Sundays but still opened. Farmers technically had no day of rest. If it was going to rain on Monday, they needed to get their hay baled on Sunday. If their tractor needed a vital part to start plowing, they couldn’t wait another twenty-four hours.

Lily followed Dillon to a display of blue jeans. Lily hastily picked up a pair from the children’s sizes. She looked around and grabbed a flannel shirt and a man’s white undershirt and boy under britches. Dillon walked up, holding a pair of brown riding boots.

“These were the smallest I could find.”

Lily grasped them as though he handed her a fabulous present. Her sparkling eyes gave him an electric jolt. His thoughts wanted to escape his brain rather than engage the present reality he had placed himself in. The sooner he had her out of the way, the better. He stood helplessly as she snatched up a pair of socks on the way to the checkout.

“I figure the drive will take nine hours to get to Georgetown. Not sure exactly but think I’m in the ballpark. We’ll go to the bank first thing. Do you have any identification inside that little purse you keep clutching?” he asked as they walked back to his car.

She placed her hands on her hips and scowled. “You’re taking me to South Carolina? Across state lines. Have you thought this out? You are asking for serious trouble.”

“Sweetheart, this isn’t a game. This is not a grand adventure you can shock and entertain your friends with like a new dance move, showing off your pretty tutti. Over half a million dollars in whiskey was stolen from me, and I spent nine months in a hellhole prison because some son of a bitch set me up. So someone was looking for serious trouble long before I met you.”

Lily looked at the clothing bundle Dillon had bought. She gave a slight shake of her head. “Yes, I have my driver’s license. I got it the day I turned seventeen. Let’s go. I need to find a place where I can put these on.”

“Open my glove box. I have a map in there,” Dillon said. “I’ll pull over and let you change.”

“Thanks.”

He pulled his car to a roadside stop and took the map she handed him. He opened the leaflet and spread it across the concrete picnic table. As he studied the map, she finished dressing.

She needed time to think. At least with decent clothes that fit, she could clear her mind and figure out what she should do next. She rapped on her window.

“Probably take more than nine hours.” He slid into the car and then glanced her way. “Looks like everything fit pretty well.
